What is a "Kid-friendly audition"?

HERE'S THE SCOOP!

Here is what you can expect in your 10 minute "kid-friendly" audition:

  1. Portions from a prepared solo piece of your own choice.
  2. One or more scales of your choice.
  3. Music for sight-reading, chosen from the repertoire that the VYO will be playing in the upcoming season.
  4. Contact if you are interested in auditions.

Valley Youth Orchestra Director, Ken Todd

Ken Todd, Valley Youth Orchestra director

Mr. Todd has been the Director of the Valley Youth Orchestra since 2004. He is also the Director of Orchestras and the Applied String Studio at Western State College of Colorado in Gunnison. His responsibilities at Western have included teaching  the private lesson studios for violin, viola, cello and double bass.  Mr. Todd is also the director of the orchestras; and teacher of string education, music fundamentals and appreciation, and upper division Music Theory.

He is active as a faculty recitalist on both violin and viola and frequently performs in and around the Gunnison - Crested Butte area.  Mr. Todd is also active in the Western State Chamber Music Institution; a camp held in June on the campus of Western State College.  He teaches violin and viola in the June camp and also serves as an ensemble coach for various chamber groups associated with the institute.  His degrees include a  BM from the University of Nebraska-Omaha and a MM from the University of Texas at Austin.

Concerts

FREE admission except for the Dinner Concert in January
  • Dec 12th, 2009, 1:00 p.m. Concert at Delta United Methodist Church map
  • Jan 22nd, 2010 Strings in Schools
  • Jan 30th, 2010 - Silent Auction (begins 5:00pm), Dinner(5:30-7:00Pm) Concert (7:00pm) at Delta High School (map and flyer )
  • Concert with VSO at Delta County Center for the Performing Arts (map) on April 30th, 7:30 p.m.
  • Concert with VSO at Montrose Pavilion (map) on May 2nd, 3:00 p.m.
  • Spring Concert at Wright Opera House (Ouray) on May 7th at 7:00pm

Rehearsal Schedule

The Youth Orchestra has Saturday Rehearsals at the Delta United Methodist Church , 477 Meeker (corner of 5th and Meeker - see map).

Rehearsal Times

  • 8:50 am to 9:50 am,: Concertino I
  • 9:50 am to 11:15 am, Philharmonic II
  • 11:25 am to 12:30 pm: Symphonic III

Fees

The Registration Fee is now $130 plus 10 hours of volunteer time per semester or $100 plus 10 hours plus snacks for two (2) different breaks. See Board members for the Fee for other time commitments and for possible scholarships. This Fee is due on February 6, 2010 unless arrangements based on financial circumstances are made.
